Founded in 1919, the New York Daily News was the first newspaper printed in tabloid format and was once the most widely circulated newspaper in the United States. The newspaper is well known for sensational headlines that use loaded words (wording designed to influence an audience by appealing to emotions or stereotypes) and hard-hitting journalism. Its coverage focuses on crime and city issues, using deep sourcing and doorstep reporting. It is also known for its front page lurid photographs and entertainment features such as cartoons. The Daily News was once owned by the Tribune Company, but in 2017 it was sold to Tronc, a media company that owns many newspapers across the country.
