Why Are Automobiles So Popular?
Automobiles are four-wheeled vehicles primarily designed for passenger transportation and powered by an internal combustion engine using a volatile fuel. Originally, they were expensive and complicated to build and operate. But they grew in popularity and the industry evolved as technology improved. New designs and innovations pushed manufacturers to produce more affordable cars that were easier to use, drive and maintain. Today, there are more than 50 million automobiles on the world’s roads.
INDEPENDENCE
Owning your own vehicle provides you with the freedom to travel where and when you want. You can visit friends and family, take road trips, or go shopping. And you can get to work on time without having to rely on public transportation or waiting for someone else to get you there. When you own your car, you’re in control of what happens to it and its maintenance. This sense of independence can also give you a feeling of security when traveling with your family.
In addition to the convenience that a car can provide, it can also be an important symbol of self-reliance and social status. Early in the 20th century, women began to use cars as a way to promote their rights and equality. They drove to rallies and decorated their cars with banners that read “votes for women.”
COMMUNICATION
Having a car gives you the freedom to connect with others. You can meet up with friends for lunch, visit your parents in another state, or spend the day with your children. You can even make a call to an insurance agent or doctor when you need one. And you can also use your car to carry around heavy packages when you don’t feel like going all the way to the post office.
The American auto industry developed quickly after the invention of the automobile in Europe. By the first decade of the 20th century, automobiles were affordable to middle-class Americans. Karl Benz invented the modern automobile in 1885 and Henry Ford revolutionized the manufacturing process so that many more people could afford them.
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
Modern automobiles have thousands of complex technical systems. Many of these systems have evolved from breakthroughs in existing technologies and the development of materials such as high-strength plastics and new alloys of steel and nonferrous metals. Research and development engineers work hard to improve the body, chassis, engine, transmission, electrical system and safety features of automobiles.
