Entertaiment is a word that’s used to describe all sorts of activities: the clown at a birthday party, Broadway shows, stadium rock concerts, and your friends fighting over the last potato chip are all forms of entertainment. The word’s root is the Old French entretenir, which has to do with hospitality and keeping guests happy. We also use the term to refer to any agreeable occupation for the mind or diversion, such as solving a crossword puzzle or reading a book.
Sometimes, if the activity is very popular or well known, we’ll abbreviate it to entmt. You might see this on a flier or in industry news publications.
