Founded on January 28, 1878, the Yale Daily News is the oldest college newspaper in the United States. It is published Monday through Friday during the academic year, and serves the students and community of Yale University and New Haven, Connecticut. The News also publishes a weekly WEEKEND edition and special issues throughout the year, including the Yale-Harvard Game Day Issue, Commencement Issue, and the News Magazine. The News is editorially independent and financially self-sustaining. A number of its alumni have gone on to become prominent figures in journalism and public life.
The Daily News covers a wide range of topics. These include news related to sports, politics, the arts, and culture. The paper also provides updates on current affairs and environmental concerns. Its quiz section is a great tool for aspirants looking to improve their understanding of current affairs.
In the 1920s, the New York Daily News became the first successful tabloid in the United States. It attracted readers with sensational crime and scandal coverage, lurid photographs, and a range of other entertainment features. It also emphasized political wrongdoing and social intrigue, such as the Teapot Dome Scandal and the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication. It was an early adopter of the Associated Press wirephoto service and developed a large staff of photographers.
The News’s editorial stance has varied over the years. In the 1940s, it espoused conservative populism, but by the mid-1970s it had moved toward a more moderate position. Since the 1990s, it has adopted a liberal stance, competing with the more centrist Post and right-wing New York Times. The News has often been a critical voice against President Trump and other Republican leaders.
