The arts of entertainment may include any activity that appeals to the senses or emotions and can be categorized as either passive or active. The term entertains, from Old English entomen, means to divert or amuse; to give delight or pleasure. The art forms of music, poetry, painting, sculpture, and architecture all serve the purpose of entertaining. In addition to the aesthetic effect, they often communicate ideas, information, or instruction.
