Daily News provides a wide range of local and national news to readers across New York City. The paper includes intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, a large sports section and an opinion page. Daily News writers, columnists and opinion formers bring the world to their readers through news and exclusives. Its award-winning writers and journalists provide top headlines, national and international news, politics and the latest in sports and entertainment. Daily News also has a unique focus on the city’s most beloved teams, including the Yankees, Mets and Giants.
The newspaper’s origin is often traced back to the early nineteenth century, when it was published as the Daily Evening Star in Brooklyn. In the 1920s, the News moved to a tabloid format and grew in size and scope, eventually becoming one of the most widely read dailies in the country. The News was an early adopter of Associated Press wirephoto service and developed a staff of photographers. Its storied history is highlighted by an extensive collection of historical and contemporary images, including photographs of the Titanic sinking, the Teapot Dome scandal and Wallis Simpson’s romance with King Edward VIII.
In the digital era, the newspaper has shifted its focus away from traditional print journalism and into online and mobile-enabled delivery. Its digitized version, Daily News Now, is available through a free app on Apple and Android devices and has a readership of over three million. Daily News Now has a variety of features, including the ability to download stories for offline reading and to share articles through email or social media. It has also a search function that allows users to find specific words or phrases throughout the article, as well as a “Top Story” feature that highlights the most-read articles.
The Yale Daily News Historical Archive provides access to digitized versions of printed issues from over 140 years of YDN reporting. This collection is open to the public and contains a mix of full-text articles as well as scanned images. This archive is part of the Digital Library of the Americas and is administered by the Yale University Library.
The Yale Daily News Historical Archive has been made possible by an anonymous gift to the Library from a YDN alumnus. This generous gift enables the Archive to continue to be maintained and improved, and ensures that this important resource is available to a wide audience worldwide. The Yale Library is grateful to the donor for this important support of this project.
