Founded in 1919, Daily News was the first successful tabloid in the United States and once had one of the largest circulations of any newspaper in the world. It was known for sensational stories of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and entertainment features such as cartoons. It was also an early adopter of the Associated Press wirephoto service and built up a large staff of photographers.
In its heyday, the Chicago Daily News was renowned for the quality of its international coverage and was considered one of the great American dailies in its time. However, rising expenses and declining circulation eventually forced the paper to fold in 1978.
The News was sold to Tronc in 2017. As of March 2020, the Daily News is undergoing a transition period as it moves from its current home on Third Street in New York City to a new location near Herald Square. It is also in the process of cutting jobs and reorganizing. In addition, the newspaper has a new publisher, editor in chief, and design team.
Each Daily News article contains comprehension and critical thinking questions, found in the “Coverage” section below the main story. These can be used in the classroom to help students better understand and retain the information they read.
Daily News articles are written by staff members, freelance writers, and contributors who are knowledgeable about the subject matter they write about. In some cases, an expert in the field may be interviewed to provide additional insight into the topic. Regardless of who writes the piece, it is reviewed for sense and accuracy by a physician member of the ASCO Daily News Editorial Board, who recuses himself or herself in the event of a conflict of interest.
ASCO Daily News articles are accompanied by “Background” and “Resources” sections that can be used in the classroom to enhance learning about the topics covered. Each piece is thoroughly fact-checked and edited for brevity and clarity.
In addition to its general interest news, the Daily News offers intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics, a sports section, and an opinion section. The News has a reputation for left-center political bias, though it does have a strong record of factual reporting. It is considered a trusted source for local news in the metropolitan area of New York. However, it is not widely regarded as an authoritative source for in-depth news and reporting. For this reason, the Daily News is not usually considered a highly reliable news source.
