About Entertaiment
The range of entertainment is vast, from an individual selecting his or her own private entertainment from a variety of pre-recorded media products; to banquets and parties for groups of any size; to performances intended for thousands; and beyond. Entertainment is generally associated with amusement and humour, although many entertainments have a more serious purpose, such as a ceremony, religious festival or satire for example.
The word entertainment derives from the Medieval Latin intertenere, meaning “to hold inside.” It is a descendent of the Indo-European root ten, which means to stretch or expand. The word has also been influenced by the Latin verb entendere, meaning to keep together or maintain.
