Founded in 1919, the New York Daily News is the oldest tabloid in the United States. It is a daily newspaper, and the first in the country to be printed in tabloid format. In 1947, the paper reached peak circulation of 2.4 million copies a day.
Pulitzer Prizes
Despite recent layoffs and financial woes, Daily News has won several national journalism awards. These awards, known as Pulitzer Prizes, honor American newspapers and online news sites for quality reporting.
The Daily News won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1976, and the newspaper was also awarded in 1989. The newspaper was a finalist for photography in 1990. In 2013, the newspaper filed for bankruptcy protection. Since then, Daily News has streamlined its newsroom and reduced its staff. In fact, the newspaper has been profitable in just a year.
The Daily News won the Pulitzer for Public Service for a series on suicide, alcoholism, and the Teamsters union. The series prompted the creation of new benefits for rescuers and medical workers. It also documented the growing medical fallout from the September 11 terrorist attacks. The series included contributions from many ADN staff members.
Move downtown in 2011
During the mid 1990s, The Daily News moved from its home in the Daily News Building on East 42nd Street to a larger building on West 33rd Street. That move had a lot to do with convenience.
At the time, the Daily News was owned by Rupert Murdoch. Later, it was sold to Tribune Publishing, which was known as Tronc until its purchase by Tribune Publishing in 2017. Now, the Daily News is owned by Mort Zuckerman, a partner with a major owner.
It was rumored that The Daily News was planning a move to a new headquarters in the Financial District. This would have involved a major renovation of the building, which was originally designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood.
Sale to Tronc in 2017
tronc’s recent acquisition of the Daily News has implications for the future of the New York newspaper industry. Tronc will acquire the tabloid’s assets, including a printing plant in Jersey City, New Jersey. The company will also acquire the Daily News’ pension liabilities, which are believed to be in the tens of millions of dollars.
The company has also entered into a non-binding letter of intent to acquire Wrapports Holdings Holdings, LLC, which owns the Chicago Sun-Times. The acquisition will allow Tronc to launch a new division called Tribune Interactive.
Wrapports’ management approached Tronc leadership about pursuing a transaction, and the company published a notice of its proposed acquisition.
Reception in the GLOW region
Guests will enjoy a free Glow reception from 5-7 pm on Monday, November 26, at the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council, located at 125 South Main Street, Georgetown. This is the first of many events in GLOW season, which is an outdoor public light art experience. It will be running from November 26, 2022 through January 22, 2023. It features a variety of artists, including: Amy Meisner, Makayla Hilchey-Richthammer, Cassie Bratcher, Michelle Vollmer, Ty Ozkaynacak, and Lisa Gautieri. These artists will be creating works of art in response to the theme “Birthstones.”
There will be live music, local food, drinks, and giveaways. Admission to the Glow event is free, but tickets are limited.
